All men desire knowledge; but what use is knowledge if we lack faith and do not fear God. Surely the humble worker that serves God is much better than the proud philosopher who studies the courses of the stars while he neglects his salvation. He who knows himself is humble in his own sight and has no desire for man’s praise. If I knew all the things in the world and lacked charity, how will that help me in the sight of God, who will judge me according to my deeds? Case trying to know too much, for therein lies much distraction and deceit. Learned men are anxious to seem learned and be thought wise. Many of the things they know will never help their souls. That man is foolish who does not value the things that are his salvation above all other things. Great words do not elevate the soul but a good life refreshes the mind and a pure conscience gives one great confidence in God. The more you know and the better you understand, the harsher shall be your judgment, unless you live a more holy life. Therefore do not boast of your knowledge or your skill, rather let those talents be used for the glory of God. If you think that you know and understand many things, you must realize that there are many more things that you do not know. Do not think yourself over wise, but rather acknowledge your own ignorance. Why do not prefer yourself over all others? There are many who are more learned and wiser in God’s laws than you. If you will learn or know anything profitably, first love to be unknown and to be considered as nothing. The highest and most profitable is a true understanding of man’s unimportance. To consider yourself as nothing and yet always think highly and well of others is great wisdom and perfection. If you see another sin openly or commit some dreadful offense do not think yourself better; for you do not know how long you may be blameless. We are all weak but you should consider no man weaker than yourself.
